Starting Monday, traffic around Square One Shopping Centre could get chaotic due to construction of the roundabout at the intersection with Square One Dr.; S. Z$ s1 y9 D, B. C3 `) Y6 h
Having already suffered weeks of lane closures as preliminary curb work was being done, motorists traveling along Duke of York, north of Burnhamthorpe Dr., will now be forced to re-route to allow for the construction of the roundabout itself, which is adjacent to the new Sheridan College campus.

In anticipation of its opening, the City of Mississauga has prepared a pamphlet to explain to motorists and pedestrians how to navigate them safely. The primer, complete with a diagram, is currently being mailed to households.5 D# O6 I: l2 z# K: t% z
It instructs drivers to slow down when approaching the roundabout; yield to all those already in the roundabout before entering; merge with the traffic in the roundabout when safe; continue counter-clockwise; and exit using right signal as they approach their exit. j* q2 `' w- o, }, s- Z2 o
The City will also host awareness sessions at Square One and Sheridan College.6 S& D0 L& }: y; ]
Experts believe roundabouts reduce the severity of collisions by 75 per cent. For one thing, they eliminate high-speed T-bone crashes that are often fatal at signalled intersections. Head-on collisions are eliminated. Roundabouts are virtually maintenance-free and don’t require traffic signals.8 B* o# C: l' D! \ x
“The City’s Downtown21 Master Plan has identified roundabouts as features that will help make the downtown vibrant and pedestrian friendly,” said Martin Powell, Mississauga's commissioner of transportation and works., C0 C- G8 n1 ~' P3 y Y
The European-style ‘traffic circles,’ once considered archaic, are slowly being introduced in many parts of the United States and Canada in locations where major upgrades are needed or bridge-building can be avoided.

“They’re so full of advantages that we’re looking at them seriously for each intersection that needs a rebuild or other improvements such as new traffic signals, and there are dozens of these, said Jim Carrick, Peel Region’s manager of traffic engineering.; c# p7 Y3 {3 r# P
It’s estimated eliminating traffic signals can save $150,000 plus $7,000 in annual maintenance costs. There already are Ministry of Transportation minimum standards to be met in designing and building them.6 V x3 }! a. R$ m+ E2 B' {/ g6 F
