" f- s7 L( b" @- D* ?Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been called in after a Peel Regional Police cruiser and a car collided on Friday night near Sheridan Centre, seriously injuring an eight-year-old boy.2 G1 ]) X" ]& s0 H, i: X0 R+ v
$ i8 G: W6 b4 ^) c' y: _SIU spokesperson Frank Phillips confirmed this afternoon that the provincial watchdog, which investigates incidents involving police where there has been a death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault to determine whether officers should be charged, is involved due to the severity of the boy's injuries.4 M7 h& v5 e7 W
The boy, who was initially taken to a local hospital and later transported to Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children, is expected to recover, said Peel Cst. Thomas Ruttan.
+ y7 o# Y7 ]; t% s3 n% jMeanwhile, police and the SIU are looking for witnesses to the Erin Mills Pkwy./Sheridan Park Dr. crash, which sent two other people, including a police officer, to hospital just after 9 p.m. The officer, who suffered minor injuries, was released from hospital.
3 b1 X; {( H# Z% ]3 DThe boy's mother, who was driving the other car, a Mazda, was also treated and released.
/ }6 H& z* [: s% M2 aPhillips said the SIU has yet to assign any subject or witnesses officers.
