Volunteers within the Chinese community have planned a grand celebration at 1177 Central Pkwy W. between 7 and 10 p.m. to celebrate the popular Asian festival, which is also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival and Lantern Festival to the Chinese and Vietnamese community.8 t' O u3 `6 L6 Z
It features multicultural performances, karaoke with prizes, face painting and a lucky draw. Traditional moon cakes and lanterns will also be handed out for free.
1 e- F$ p5 \! [( \$ MVictor Oh, who heads the group of volunteers organizing the event, says the Moon Festival is like Thanksgiving celebrated by western cultures.
. r! y" h) ?' h9 p. b1 S& C; [It celebrates the autumnal equinox of the solar calendar when the moon is at its fullest and roundest. Traditionally, families and friends gather to admire the bright mid-autumn harvest moon while lighting up paper lanterns and eating mooncakes.* a e% V( a$ A
Oh says he hopes that the whole community will gather to share in the celebration.# N t+ e* w7 J# d0 r' ]
"We want to invite other groups so they can get involved, bring their children, and get to know this beautiful tradition," he said. |
