Having already suffered weeks of lane closures as preliminary curb work was being done, motorists traveling along Duke of York, north of Burnhamthorpe Dr., will now be forced to re-route to allow for the construction of the roundabout itself, which is adjacent to the new Sheridan College campus.

, d0 M- K2 \! T; q6 rIn anticipation of its opening, the City of Mississauga has prepared a pamphlet to explain to motorists and pedestrians how to navigate them safely. The primer, complete with a diagram, is currently being mailed to households.4 d1 p: C* [4 N% n& N( _6 f( j1 q) [
It instructs drivers to slow down when approaching the roundabout; yield to all those already in the roundabout before entering; merge with the traffic in the roundabout when safe; continue counter-clockwise; and exit using right signal as they approach their exit.

Experts believe roundabouts reduce the severity of collisions by 75 per cent. For one thing, they eliminate high-speed T-bone crashes that are often fatal at signalled intersections. Head-on collisions are eliminated. Roundabouts are virtually maintenance-free and don’t require traffic signals.

It’s estimated eliminating traffic signals can save $150,000 plus $7,000 in annual maintenance costs. There already are Ministry of Transportation minimum standards to be met in designing and building them.
