& N& t$ S8 h9 v* R1 s0 ?0 _Jarrett Johns, 35, of Toronto, accused of running a red light while driving the Mississauga fire truck that struck Kimberley Schulz's car, returns to Brampton court next Thursday to set a trial date, said his lawyer, Brian Starkman.0 B' V" L' M3 C9 x1 L1 }& M, i
"(A trial) is what it's looking like at this stage," he said. "We're attempting to obtain full disclosure that's relevant to the case and that can be a lengthy process."% C) O z3 `1 Q1 w4 f; k% j
Schulz's family members and Peel Regional Police Major Collision Bureau investigators will attend next week's court hearing.. J* P4 }) p. T/ R. _8 f' q
Starkman hasn't minced words when asked about Johns' views on the charge.; D9 U) j5 q0 t/ q
"He is definitely maintaining his innocence in this matter," Starkman said.
2 }7 l$ F N# l7 p' V8 d$ _' GSchulz, 42, who hailed from a family of firefighters, was returning home after playing hockey at York University when she was killed in the Britannia Rd. W./Rodeo Dr. crash, which occurred a few minutes before noon on a Sunday.6 F2 |* J. g: m, n
Her car was destroyed in the collision.: h* Q% B7 G0 N# P
The fire truck had its lights and sirens activated, as it was responding to a nearby crash, police say.0 ]- r0 H$ Z @: U
None of the three firefighters on board were injured. m; L" T% e) `) l
Johns hasn't been suspended.
/ j8 P6 k" t. D Z! kIn an interview last month, Mississauga Fire Chief John McDougall didn't rule out changes to policy or driver training procedures in the wake of the fatal crash.
$ f- f3 d$ w+ c- R1 B' uSchulz, known to her husband and friends as "Blondie," was only steps away from fashion retailer Nygard, where she had worked part-time as a sales associate for about a year, when the crash occurred. She worked full-time for a Vaughan filtration company.
+ R" b) i1 T+ b, R' V4 _Peel Cst. Doug Tracey said at the time that the traffic light sensor system, which changes lights for oncoming emergency vehicles, was activated.
$ J% v' ]# k0 |1 ?By law, a fire truck en route to a call must come to a complete stop at a red light before proceeding.
5 F( k5 }! W5 xPolice charged Johns under the Highway Traffic Act. If convicted, he faces a fine of up to $1,000.
